Rugged and gentle MTB legends follow one after another in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, the Dolomites – from the iconic Plan de Corones, through the gentle Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, to the unique Herrensteig. And it is precisely this diversity that makes mountain biking in the San Vigilio Dolomites in South Tyrol so unique.
A first-hand Dolomites adventure – a mountain biking holiday in San Vigilio
The Dolomites in South Tyrol are a vast adventure playground for all ages. When it comes to mountain biking in San Vigilio, the itinerary includes both the Fanes-Sennes-Prags and Puez-Geisler nature parks as well as gentle low-mountain pastures – depending entirely on your mood, preference and riding ability. As well as the 1,620 m high local peak Piz de Plaies , the iconic Kronplatz awaits you – featuring the unique Messner Mountain Museum Corones and the LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography at 2,275 m, the brilliant Kronplatz Bike Park and some of South Tyrol’s all-time legendary singletrack trails.
The Pale Mountains and the Furkel Pass lie within the Approved Bike Area right on our doorstep; the Dolomite panorama is unbeatable. And the MTB opportunities are even better. If you’re keen to work on your skills, you can cut your teeth at the Skills Park Cir. Situated right next to the top station of the Piz de Plaies cable car, it offers plenty of challenges – for budding bikers and seasoned riders alike.
Legendary: the Nature Park Loop
If you want to experience the unspoilt Alpine landscape and high-Alpine terrain up close on narrow trails, then you shouldn’t miss the almost 52 km long Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park Loop. This historic adventure through the Dolomites starts from San Vigilio and leads first through the valley to the iconic Pederü mountain inn – the meeting place for bikers. From here, the steep climb to the Rifugio Fanes demands a good level of fitness, but rewards you with spectacular views. The 500-metre climb is as challenging as it is steeped in history, as the 2,500-metre-long track, with its 21 hairpin bends, was once carved out of the rock by the Austrian Kaiserjäger. A prime example of alpine mountain biking in the San Vigilio Dolomites.
After a refreshing stop at 2,100 m, the route heads downhill to the pass road linking Cortina d’Ampezzo with Dobbiaco. The descent takes you via the Rifugio Fodara Vedla and finally back to San Vigilio. A unique experience with breathtaking panoramas, fascinating wildlife and living history.
