Flachau Cycling Region – from cycling adventures to signature rides
The Enns Cycle Path to Stoneman Taurista: Facts & Figures from one of the most diverse mountain biking areas in the Salzburg region

So, what sort of cyclist are you?
Are you more the type for a gentle cycle path along the riverbank OR the type for a gruelling MTB challenge covering 147 km and 4,700 metres of elevation gain?
Either way, Flachau is the right choice. Because Flachau somehow has it all. Whether it’s a challenging multi-day tour, a unique alpine challenge, a scenic alpine pasture loop with stops for refreshments, or a gentle e-MTB ride along the river Enns. The region in the heart of the Salzburg Sports World is not only home to ‘Herminator’ Hermann Maier, but also a major stage for a wide variety of cycling styles – from classic cycle paths to signature rides:
Classic cycle route: the Enns Cycle Path
In Flachauwinkl, you join the Enns Cycle Path straight away: This multi-day tour, around 263 kilometres long, follows Austria’s longest inland river and takes you through the three federal states of Salzburg, Styria and Upper Austria – from the alpine mountains around Flachau via Schladming and the Gesäuse to Enns on the Danube. A real cycling adventure for anyone who wants to discover Austria on two wheels.
Signature Ride: Stoneman Taurista
If you’re looking for the ultimate mountain bike challenge in the region, the Stoneman Taurista is a must: The 147-kilometre MTB loop, with 4,700 metres of elevation gain, winds through the impressive mountain landscape of the Salzburger Sportwelt – past alpine pastures, mountain lakes and peaks offering spectacular views. The route can be completed in one, two or three days. A true cycling adventure for anyone who doesn’t just want to clock up the kilometres whilst mountain biking, but also wants to experience the Salzburg mountains to the full.
What really makes the region special
Mountain biking in Flachau is therefore less a question of ‘either/or’ and more a matter of personal choice: ‘What shall it be today?’. Flachau works equally well as a cycling holiday destination for several days and as a starting point for ultimate cycling adventures. For between the Dachstein and the Tauern, wide valley floors meet gentle ridges, and alpine pastures with stunning views meet striking peaks. Flachau is therefore, above all, a versatile cycling region: not so much “one trail, one mountain, one highlight” – but rather plenty of opportunities to plan your cycling holiday anew every day.
Totally local!
Added to this are cosy huts for a well-deserved break and a taste of Salzburg’s culinary delights along the way. The culinary identity of the Flachau region offers a blend of Pongau and Salzburg home-style cooking, rustic alpine and mountain hut fare, regional produce and modern Alpine cuisine. From traditional ‘Brettljause’ with cheese, bacon, bread and butter to savoury ‘Kasnocken’, classic ‘Kaspressknödel’ and fluffy ‘Kaiserschmarrn’. The sweet blackberry ‘Nocken’ are also a real hidden gem – be sure to give them a try!
