A single trail close to nature and accessible by lift. A swimming lake with turquoise water and secluded swimming bays. And a bike tour that combines both - mountain biking at Lake Weißensee is truly wonderful.
Despite its beauty, Lake Weißensee is still an insider tip. Hotel resorts, high-end boutiques, mountain cart and speed cable cars - you will find none of those here. Is it perhaps because of the seclusion?
Or is it perhaps because there are not as many altitude metres from the lakeside as in other places? Whatever the reason - it makes sure that the lake and its communities have been able to preserve their originality. The Weißensee Trail, built in 2016, fits seamlessly in the picture here: Instead of building a wide piste using diggers, a single trail close to nature was created. With 3.3 kilometres in length, it doesn’t set any records, but its charm is the naturalness and the attractive surroundings. Lake Weißensee is of drinking water quality, the secluded swimming bays can be approached by rowing boat ... You shouldn’t come here just for mountain biking.
You can access the trail by taking the comfortable mountain railway or you approach the trail via the Naggler Alm tour. With its possibility for a stop on the alpine pasture and the sensational views to Lake Weißensee, this tour should be on the agenda at least once. The starting point is at the southern shore at the tourist information directly at the bridge. The route leads from there approx. 2.5 kilometres along the lakeside road to an information sign pointing in direction Naggl. And it is uphill from here.
A panorama in a class of its own compensates for the in part steep uphill forest paths. Even though the trail leads right through the Gailtal Valley Alps, the view reminds sometimes of the Caribbean: turquoise water, white sand. Still, it is a constant reminder of what is waiting for you as a reward for all the efforts.
You then follow the information signs to the Naggler Alm. Once arrived at the wooden barrier, lift your bike over the barrier and you are almost there: just a few more metres to the well-deserved jause. The trail shows what it is made of from the start: it meanders across flat and solid, non-slip ground with a moderate incline through a dense forest. You almost forget that this trail for mountain bikers was only created recently. It has the character of a real, flowy single trail. Thanks to the wonderful curves you get into the flow and get lost in the moment after just a few metres.
Towards the end, the trail leaves the forest. A small technique parcourse with a wooden seesaw and other obstacles is waiting at the end and invites to play and practice. Once arrived at the bottom, it is quite likely that you get on the lift straight away again. The organisers and builders of the Weißensee Trail can be proud of their work: a short but fine trail which fits harmonically in the surrounding area. A real beauty of nature!
