4 days / 3 nights, approx. 146 km / 4.200 altitude metres
36-58 km / 1.100-1.750 altitude metres daily
This beautiful 3-day mountain bike tour is a wonderful combination of isolated alpine pastures in the Salzburg Tennengau and the hustle and bustle at Lake Wolfgang. The rugged peaks of the Gosau Massif and the impressive Tennen Mountains are constant companions on this tour. Starting from Annaberg in the Lammertal Valley, the route leads to Hintersee. It won’t take long and you will see Lake Wolfgang and the Zwölferhorn. Crossing Austria’s largest plateau - the Postalm, the route leads back to Annaberg. Apart from the accessible track around the peaks of the Zwölferhorn, you will not exceed 1.300 m above sea level on this tour. This is why the Salzburg alpine pasture tour is also an excellent mountain bike tour in spring and late autumn.
Day 1: Individual arrival in Annaberg
Day 2: Annaberg - Hintersee, 52 km, 1.350 altitude metres
Annaberg - Abtenau - Seewaldsee - St. Koloman – via the Tauglboden to Hintersee
You start in the morning downhill towards the Bundesstraße. Shortly after, you follow the Lammer river to Voglau. The first ascent is waiting at the Badwirt inn. At the Lienbachschmied, look for the signpost “Osterhorn-Route“. Bike from St. Koloman towards Sommerau; the first Salzburg alpine pastures await you here. You reach the Grundbichl jause stop and the Bergalm via the Tauglboden. The MTB route leads from here via a cart path and later forest path to Hintersee.
Day 3: Hintersee - Abersee / St. Wolfgang, 36 km, 1.100 altitude metres
Hintersee – via the Zwölferhorn to Abersee / Lake Wolfgang
You reach the Zwölferhorn via the Schafbachalm. This is followed by a short downhill ride before you turn towards Grögneralm. You then arrive at the upper terminus. For the way back, take the same route. At the Steingrabenalm, turn your mountain bike to the left in direction Abersee and the spectacular Lake Wolfgang will be right in front of you. Continue on the country road to reach Abersee, the stage destination of the Salzburg alpine pasture tour.
Day 4: Abersee / St. Wolfgang - Annaberg, 58 km, 1.750 altitude metres
Abersee / Lake Wolfgang - Postalm – via the Edtalm to Annaberg
The last day in the Salzkammergut starts with a leisurely ride along the shores of Lake Wolfgang in direction Strobl. From here, you bike uphill on the old Postalmstraße to Austria’s largest plateau. The route then continues via the idyllic Postalm steadily downhill into the Lammertal Valley. From Voglerau, follow again the Lammer river. If you still have enough energy, take a detour uphill to the Edtalm, which is a nice additional loop. Otherwise, you end your MTB holiday on the Salzburg alpine pasture tour directly in Annaberg.
Return of the luggage by 5:30 pm at the latest.
The tour can be started from any of the overnight destinations!
